Minister hopes to save 5,000 jobs

Serbian Infrastructure Minister Milutin Mrkonjic has said that reorganization of Nibens Group will enable preservation of the group and 5,000 jobs. He explained that it was important that all firms owned by road construction and maintenance company Nibens Group would be able to continue their work. Minister hopes to save 5,000 jobs Mrkonjic is also convinced that new jobs will follow soon, bearing in mind their potential and experience. “We believe that the group will this way have an opportunity to start paying debts to employees, banks, economy and the state,” he said. According to him, detailed analyses done by the biggest bank creditors in the last several weeks prove the group’s potential. “The government and other state institutions will support the efforts of the biggest Nibens’ creditors in operational and financial reorganization of the companies that should follow,” Mrkonjic stressed. The infrastructure minister pointed out that the most important thing now was for other creditors to give their support and unblock Nibens Group’s accounts as well in order to allow stabilization and reorganization to begin. He called on unions to be constructive partners in the process because “the common goal is preservation of jobs and creation of conditions for a long-term sustainable business of those firms”. Nibens Group owner Milo Djuraskovic and seven company managers were arrested under suspicion of incurring EUR 32mn worth of damages to Krusevac-based FAM company. 13 companies are a part of Nibens Group and they employ about 5,200 workers and owe EUR 110mn to the banks.
