Agricultural production drops by 3.5 percent

Wheat reserves in Serbia are currently rather low, Serbian Chamber of Commerce's (PKS) Association of Agriculture Secretary Milan Prostran stated Friday. He added that wheat export had increased from the planned 100,000 tons to about 618,000 in 2010. Agricultural production drops by 3.5 percent "Serbia should rationalize consumption until the next harvest," he said, adding that the government was expected to take certain measures so as to prevent shortages. “The volume of agricultural production in Serbia dropped by 3-3.5 percent in 2010,” Prostran pointed out at the association's session, stating PKS's preliminary data. The estimated gross value of agricultural production in 2010 is USD 5.21bn, USD 3.64bn of which is crop production and USD 1.57bn livestock production. He said that the situation was slightly better in crop production - the production of corn increased by 12.7 percent, of sugar beet by 21.6 percent, of tobacco by six percent, whereas the sunflower production was at the break-even point in 2010. “The production of wheat suffered a 21 percent decline, of potatoes 1.2 percent, plums 35.6 percent and grapes 23.4 percent,” Prostran stressed.
