Deputy PM Bozidar Djelic stated on Monday that Serbia attracted direct foreign investments at the total value of EUR 800mn in the first eight months of 2010. Serbia still faces a number of structural reforms and market opening, which is why the country is looking to sell majority of its shares in Telekom Srbija telecommunications company, Djelic said at the conference organized by the Greek Tsomokos Group. Djelic pointed out that by improving its business climate, Serbia will continue to attract foreign investors, particularly in the domain of infrastructure. The minister also called on Greek companies to take part in projects related to Corridor 10. He noted that the country's priority in the next period will be to counter poverty and unemployment, which has reached almost 20 percent. Djelic stated that Serbia needs a stronger social component to preserve social cohesion necessary for uninterrupted work of investors. The minister reminded that the government froze public sector salaries and pensions at the end of 2009, which, together with the weakening of the domestic currency, reduced Serbian citizens' purchasing power. Foreign investors also felt this change, especially in the domains of telecommunications and trade, Djelic noted.
