There is a milk shortage in Serbia because primary producers are not delivering sufficient amount of milk to dairies, says the trade minister. Trade Minister Slobodan Milosavljevic told B92 that the government would resort to emergency import of milk if the new regulation did not yield results. He stressed that retail chains were also a part of the problem, but only because they owed great debts to suppliers. “The regulation requiring dairies to process at least 40 percent of the daily amount of milk came into effect seven days ago. It takes some more time for its action to fill the market,” Milosavljevic explained. According to him, import of milk will be necessary if the regulation yields no results, i.e. if there is not enough milk in Serbian stores. The government adopted a regulation on milk production and trade on September 30, aiming at solving the issue of milk supply on the market. Serbia’s market is open, there are 150 dairies, the minister said and added that everyone who wanted to invest was welcome. He pointed out that consumers will not be threatened and that the Consumer Protection Law would come into effect on January 1, but also the so-called law on protection of consumers of financial services which was being prepared by the National Bank of Serbia (NBS). According to Milosavljevic, the document will include a directive that concerns consumer loans which was removed from the Consumer Protection Law at the last moment. “The NBS is working on the law and representatives of the ministry are involved in the working group. I expect the document to enter the parliamentary procedure in the beginning of November,” he concluded. Slobodan Milosavljevic (FoNet)
