State Secretary with the Ministry of Mining and Energy Nikola Rajakovic said that the working group stressed at its session that their ultimate goal is the introduction of a second supplier of electric energy north of the Ibar River. “Our ultimate goal is the quality operation of a second provider and supplier of electric energy in Kosovo and Metohija, which includes the generation, distribution, trade and maintenance of the electric-energy system. We expect the international community will be receptive to what is in everyone's best interest,” Rajakovic said. Head of the Kosovska Mitrovica District Radenko Nedeljkovic said that the electric energy supply has been “consistent and without major hitches, other than in the attempts to charge consumers”. “Electricity must be paid for and we will be drafting a social statistics map of the population in the near future, so those consumers who cannot afford to pay will be taken care of,” he said. “When it comes to northern Kosovo, we expect to get a second provider, and we will not allow a monopoly over this part of the province,” Nedeljkovic said. When the Kosovo energy company, KEK, cut off the electricity supply to northern Kosovo on October 20, 2009, the Serbian government began the delivery of electric energy. In mid November 2009, Serbia started charging for electric energy consumed in northern Kosovo for the first time in ten years.
