Economy Minister Mladjan Dinkic and Iranian Trade Minister Syed Masoud Mirkazemi have signed an economic cooperation protocol. “The goal of the protocol is to promote commercial cooperation with Iran, bearing in mind the large Iranian market of 82 million people and the fact that we once, in the former Yugoslavia, used to have exports of more than a billion dollars to Iran, so we will be strengthening our economic relations,” Dinkic said. It is now modest, only USD 50mn, and the Iranian trade minister said that he hoped that Serbia would soon account for at least one percent of Iran’s total foreign trade, which would be about USD 1.5bn annually,” Dinkic said. He announced that in the coming days, officials from the Economic and Energy Ministries and the Pancevo Petrohemija company would be visiting the Iranian national petrochemical company in Tehran to discuss a possible partnership between the two companies. According to Dinkic, there would be talks in Tehran on supplying the Pancevo factory with primary fuel, which is one of the company’s chief problems. It was also agreed to look into the possibility of using Iranian capacities to stockpile Serbian grain for the entire Persian Gulf, Afghanistan and Middle East, and of Serbian companies participating in the construction of silos, cold storage facilities and warehouses. An agreement on veterinary cooperation was also signed today, opening the door for exporting meat from Serbia to Iran. The Iranian delegation visiting Belgrade was also interested in Serbian agricultural products, importing meat from Serbia, and investing in the butchery industry, according to a statement from the Economy Ministry.
