Serbia was second only to the U.S. in terms of arms exports to Israel between 2004 and 2007, according to a recent Amnesty International document. The document, published on the NGO’s website, states that, according to UN figures, immediately behind the U.S.—which supplied Israel with USD 1.3bn worth of arms in that period—came the then State Union of Serbia and Montenegro, which sold Israel arms to the value of USD 8,626,560. In 2005, Serbia alone sold Israel weaponry to the tune of USD 6,331,138. AI: Serbia no.2 arms exporter to Israel After Serbia come Poland and Romania, with Bosnia-Hercegovina 13th, with sales worth USD 1,880,499, and Albania in 16th with sales worth USD 1,255,415. Serbia also figures in fifth spot on the top ten list of Israel’s ammunition suppliers, with sales worth USD 760,635, while in 2004 alone, the State Union sold ammunition to Israel totaling USD 376,681. The AI report also features a table of conventional weapons exporters to Israel between 2004 and 2007, headed by the U.S. (USD 7.8bn), followed by France (EUR 60mn), Romania (EUR 21mn) and the UK (GBP 10.5mn). The Antwerp-based NGO states that Serbian and Bosnian companies exported large quantities of ammunition and components for light weaponry, as well as artillery ammunition and mortar components, to Israeli defense contractors. Between 2005 and 2006, the Israeli Military Industry (IMI) imported millions of 5.56mm rounds from the Prvi Partizan factory in Serbia, says AI, adding that this ammunition was compatible with weaponry used by the Israeli armed forces. AI has allegedly called for an arms embargo on Israel and the Palestinian Authority, as these weapons can be used for war crimes. The organization is also urging the UN Security Council to launch an independent inquiry into war crimes perpetrated during the armed conflict in Gaza in January.
