The new budget does not envisage any increases, but Deputy PM Jovan Krkobabic – whose party campaigned on a platform of significant pension hikes – said "checks will be performed quarterly to see if there is money for a raise". In the meantime, associations gathering pensioners have asked the government to make sure that their income, just as the wages, keeps up with the projected inflation of eight percent this year. Pensions increased a total of 14.3 percent in 2008. But as the government negotiated a new arrangement with the IMF last October, this international financial institution insisted on curbing of the public spending, pensions included. The government accepted this and announced a freeze, saying at the same time that increases will be possible, if there is money.
