Zastava Arms is in the last phases of testing its new M21 rifle for the MoD, the Kragujevac plant executives say. So far the assault rifle has met all the given criteria, and if Serbia's Military Council approves the weapon's serial production in its next session, it could soon become a part of the Serbian Army (VS) standard armaments. "The M21, apart from being designed to become a part of the 21st century soldier's equipment, is becoming one of our factory's main export items, so that once the VS accepts it, a path to foreign buyers will be made easier," Zastava Arms CEO Rade Gromovic says. The 5.56mm caliber rifle is based on the AK-47, Kalashnikov, system, and is manufactured in three versions. Zastava uses its best technology, capable of putting out 25,000 pieces a year, to manufacture the weapon, which has already been sold to Macedonia, and international forces deployed in Iraq. Gromovic also says that the M21 was presented last week in Las Vegas, during the SHOT Show event there, and that it met with positive reviews. The rifle, which is significantly cheaper than similar weapons produced by the competition, has shown greater precision, and excellent performance in both desert and humid conditions.
