Predrag Bubalo says investigations should be conducted in order to see if Delta and Salford are monopolists. “I do not support saying anyone is a monopolist based on a feeling of the market situation, but I do support, wholeheartedly, a structured commission confirming with facts that a company is behaving like a monopolist,” the Trade and Services Minister told the daily Blic. Minister presses for Delta, Salford investigations Bubalo said that he is interested in dealing with the monopoly issue as far as Delta and Salford are concerned, but also other companies. “The odium I'm mentioning appeared this fall, when food prices jumped because of the drought. Monopolists do not need a drought to make gains, a monopolistic market position is enough,” Bubalo said. He said that confirming such accusations is a serious and structured job which demands expert knowledge, a good foundation of data and hard work. “Whoever is confirmed to be a monopolist will pay a severe fine, ten percent of one year's earnings, and there is also the moral punishment and public conviction,” Bubalo said. Salford is a fund within the Danube Foods Group that gathers the largest Serbian dairies, including Imlek, Novosadska, Suboticka, and a number of others. It was recently revealed that Imlek sells its milk cheaper in Podgorica than in Belgrade, which experts attributed to a lack of competition in the Serbian market, that leaves dominant players to set the prices undisturbed. Delta Holding is the largest Serbian private company, owned by Miroslav Miskovic, and absolute leader in the domestic retail sector, though its executives claim it has a legal share of the market. Last week, Politika daily editor-in-chief Ljiljana Smajlovic revealed she was pressured by Miskovic over what he saw as "unpatriotic reporting" by those who criticized his company.
