The privatization of the Serbian oil monopoly NIS will be transparent, Deputy Prime Minister Bozidar Djelic says. A new law must make it to the parliament first, and the cabinet is in agreement on this issue, he told reporters in Belgrade Thursday. "NIS privatization to be transparent" Djelic said that the public will gain insight into the NIS privatization model. According to him, a public enterprises restructuring and privatization commission will give its opinion first, followed by the government. Asked to comment on possible cooperation with Russian energy giant Gazprom, whose CEOs were in Belgrade the day before yesterday, Djelic reminded that the company was one of the three most valuable in the world, estimated to be worth USD 270bn. "Serbia will determine its cooperation with Gazprom in line with the country's national interests," he added. The minister described as "typical" comments that came in the wake of any Russian company's expressed interest in the Serbian market, referring to fears that Moscow's support over the issue of Kosovo might spell out that country's increased influence in Serbian, above all, economic affairs, adding there was "no reason for such approach." "Gazprom owns half of the world's natural gas resources and it is in Serbia's interest to cooperate with this company," Djelic concliuded. Also Thursday, the Serbian Chamber of Commerce (PKS) said that the first eight months of 2007 saw Serbia post a USD 1.4bn trade deficit in its exchange with Russia. Beta news agency reported that the overall trade in that period was at USD 1.87bn, with imports from Russia amounting for USD 1.62bn, while exports covered USD 249mn of the figure. The PKS data also shows that in 2006, the trade between the two countries was worth USD 2.46bn.
